Obesity
Obesity is a complex health condition involving having an excessive amount of body fat. It occurs when a person consumes more calories from food and drink than their body uses up, leading to weight gain and fat accumulation over time.
The main causes of obesity include:
- Overeating - Consuming high-calorie foods regularly in large portions
- Lack of exercise - Not getting enough physical activity to burn calories
- Genetics - Some people are predisposed to gain weight more easily
- Lifestyle factors - Stress, lack of sleep, work schedules can promote overeating
Diagnosing obesity:
- Obesity is often diagnosed using the body mass index (BMI), which measures body fat in relation to height and weight.
- A BMI between 25-29.9 is considered overweight.
- A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.
However, BMI has limitations, and other factors like body composition and risk factors may also be assessed.
Health risks of obesity can be serious if not managed properly:
- Increased risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers
- Breathing problems - Issues like sleep apnea
- Joint pain as excess weight puts pressure on the joints
The main treatments for obesity aim to reduce body weight and include:
- Improving nutrition - Reducing calorie intake from foods and decreasing high-fat/sugary foods
- Increasing exercise and physical activity
- Behavioral therapy to promote healthy eating habits
- For some people, weight loss medications or bariatric surgery
The key to overcoming obesity is making gradual but sustainable lifestyle changes around diet and exercise. Even losing 5-10% of body weight can lead to major health improvements. Small consistent changes to reduce calorie intake and burn more calories through activity is the most effective approach for long-term weight loss and keeping obesity at bay.
